Sun Shirt

Sun shirts are lightweight garments designed to provide ultraviolet protection while maintaining airflow and comfort during extended outdoor activity. A UPF-rated sun shirt blocks a measurable percentage of UV radiation from reaching the skin, offering a consistent layer of protection that sunscreen alone cannot replicate over a full day outdoors.

Ariat sun shirts are built for riders, workers, and outdoor enthusiasts who spend long hours in open sun and need reliable coverage without sacrificing mobility or temperature regulation.

In equestrian settings, riders face extended sun exposure during lessons, trail work, competitions, and daily barn management. An equestrian sun shirt designed for riding provides UPF coverage across the arms and torso without adding heat or restricting shoulder and arm movement.

UPF 50+ sun protection shirts from Ariat are constructed with fabrics that block the majority of UV radiation, providing consistent protection regardless of perspiration or activity level. Long sleeve sun shirts are particularly effective for arm protection during activities like grooming, longing, and arena work where the arms are frequently exposed.

Sun protection shirts for riders also consider fit through the shoulders and sleeve length, since bunching or short coverage breaks protection continuity during dynamic movement.

A fishing sun shirt built for all-day wear on the water prioritizes breathability alongside UV protection. Lightweight hooded sun shirts extend coverage to the neck and back of the head without requiring a separate hat, keeping exposure low during long stretches on the water or in the field.

For outdoor workers managing heat alongside sun exposure, breathable hot-weather shirts use venting and moisture-management construction to help regulate body temperature during physical tasks. A lightweight sun shirt in this context performs better than cotton or heavier synthetics, which trap heat and slow drying after perspiration.

Sun protection riding shirts for women balance UPF performance with the fit and length expectations of equestrian apparel, remaining tucked and smooth through active riding positions.

UV protection shirt fabrics achieve their UPF rating through a combination of fiber type, weave density, and finishing treatments. Synthetic fabrics, including polyester and nylon blends, typically provide higher inherent UV blocking than lightweight cotton because of their tighter molecular structure and consistent weave. Moisture-wicking properties are built into the fiber, moving perspiration away from the skin and supporting faster evaporative cooling.

A sun hoodie adds an integrated hood to this construction, allowing the wearer to extend coverage to the neck and face without layering. Hood-forward designs are common in fishing and outdoor work applications where sustained coverage across multiple hours is the priority.

Men's sun shirts and women's sun shirts differ primarily in shoulder width, torso length, and sleeve construction. For riders, a longer back hem maintains coverage when in a forward seat position. For general outdoor use, a relaxed fit provides easier layering beneath vests or jackets.

Sizing up in a sun shirt to gain coverage is not recommended, as excess fabric can bunch at the shoulders and underarms during active movement. Select the size that fits naturally through the chest and shoulders, and verify sleeve length reaches the wrist.

UPF ratings in sun shirts are generally durable through repeated washing when care instructions are followed. Machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and avoid fabric softeners, which can coat fibers and reduce moisture-wicking performance. Tumble dry on low or air dry to preserve elastic fibers and maintain garment shape.

Avoid prolonged exposure to chlorine or salt water without rinsing, as these can degrade synthetic fibers and reduce fabric performance over time.
