Softshell Jackets

Softshell jackets are a category of outerwear built to provide protection in variable conditions without the bulk of a fully insulated coat. Designed as water-resistant jackets and wind-resistant jackets, they help shield against light precipitation and steady gusts while maintaining breathability during active use. Ariat softshell jackets are built with work and western performance in mind, offering durable construction suited for ranch environments, jobsites, and equestrian activities.

The flexible build of a stretch jacket allows for natural movement throughout the torso, shoulders, and arms. Whether you're looking at men's softshell jackets or women's softshell jackets, the shared priority is a lightweight outdoor jacket that performs across demanding conditions without restricting motion.

Softshell jackets are a reliable choice for outdoor work crews and ranch hands operating in transitional weather. The combination of wind resistance and stretch fabric makes them practical for physical tasks that require full range of motion — lifting, reaching, or climbing — without the restriction of a stiffer shell. Work Jackets in this category are intended to deliver dependable coverage across cool mornings and breezy afternoons.

Equestrian jackets benefit from the same stretch construction that makes softshell styles popular in active outdoor settings. In riding environments, the ability to post in the saddle, adjust tack, or move between barn tasks without pulling through the shoulders is a practical advantage. Men's Jackets and Women's Jackets & Vests collections include styles built with these movement demands in mind.

A fleece-lined jacket or lightweight outdoor jacket in the softshell category transitions well from arena to everyday wear. The streamlined profile works as a standalone layer in mild temperatures and functions as a mid-layer beneath heavier outerwear when conditions drop.

Softshell jackets are typically constructed from a woven face fabric bonded to a softer interior layer, often fleece or brushed fabric. This structure helps create water-repellent outerwear that resists light rain while remaining breathable during activity. The outer layer is designed to block wind, while the inner surface helps manage warmth and comfort against the skin.

Many styles incorporate elastane or similar stretch fibers into the face fabric, allowing panels to flex and recover without losing shape. This is especially relevant for an equestrian jacket or insulated work jacket, where reaching, posting, or climbing requires unrestricted movement. Reinforced seams and durable zippers help softshell jackets hold up under repeated heavy use.

Insulated versions add a lightweight fill layer between the face and lining, making them suitable for colder conditions while remaining lighter than a traditional puffer or down coat. These styles function as both standalone outerwear and as part of a layering system beneath a heavier shell.

Softshell jackets are available in athletic and standard fits. Athletic fit styles offer a closer profile through the torso and shoulders, which reduces excess fabric during active tasks. Standard fits provide additional room for layering a mid-layer or heavier base layer underneath.

For riders and workers who move between tasks throughout the day, a stretch jacket in an athletic or semi-fitted cut typically offers the best balance of mobility and coverage. Men's Vests and Women's Vests are also available as a lighter layering alternative for milder temperatures or higher-output work where full sleeve coverage is unnecessary.

Cuff construction, hem adjustability, and pocket placement vary by style — reviewing these details helps determine which option fits daily demands.

Proper care helps maintain the water-repellent finish and stretch performance of softshell jackets over time. Machine wash on a gentle cycle using mild detergent, and avoid fabric softener, which can degrade the DWR (durable water repellent) coating. Closing zippers before washing protects hardware and seams.

Tumble dry on low heat or air dry to preserve the integrity of stretch fibers. If water beading on the surface diminishes with extended use, a wash-in or spray-on reproofing product designed for technical outerwear may help restore surface performance.
