What to Wear to a Rodeo

A Rodeo is an exciting event that’s all about a unique yet traditionally western experience. And that’s exactly what a Rodeo outfit should be: traditionally Western, functional, but totally unique to you!

Comfort should always come first, but whilst you’re paying homage to the West, don’t be afraid to make a statement and stand out from the crowd.

We’ve put together a full guide on what to wear to a rodeo, with some of our favourite pieces that we think work perfectly at capturing that perfect authentic western style.

Rodeo Outfit Guide

Denim… and make a statement

Nothing says rodeo like denim. Wearing your very best jeans is the perfect place to start when building your rodeo outfit. The most popular choices are bootcut and straight cut styles, that exude cowboy style. Blue denim is definitely most appropriate for an iconic Western event.

For men, the M8 Modern Brickell Slim Leg Jeans give a truly authentic Western look, perfect for a rodeo. The distressed blue colouring gives a lived-in look, whilst clever features make these super comfortable for all-day wear.

For women, the Arrow Fit Perfect Rise Lili Boot Cut Jeans are a classic cut, finished with traditional Western stitching on the back pocket, and will sit over your cowboy boots perfectly. If you go for a straight leg jean, like the R.E.A.L. Mid Rise Icon Stackable Straight Leg Jean, our top tip is to tuck them into the top of your boot for the ultimate rodeo look.

If you’re brave enough, double denim is a classic western approved style. Pair your favourite jeans with a denim shirt or jacket. Look for raw-edges or extra detailing for an authentic finish to your outfit.

Western boots… of course!

Not only do Western boots provide ultimate comfort, they’re also a Western style staple, a perfect addition to your rodeo wardrobe.

If you’re looking for a classic style, our Heritage J Toe Stretchfit Western Boots for women are the perfect choice – stitch detailing adds a little something special to a traditional silhouette. For men, the Willie Western Boot is a timeless, understated option that will certainly win you best-dressed.

For more of a statement (which is certainly encouraged at a rodeo), go for a bolder colour palette like the Futurity Flash Western Boot in Crimson, or even a striking silver style that’s bound to turn heads. The Renegade Western Boot for men is also a showstopper, with contrasting colour panels and extra stitching.

Belt Buckles (the bigger the better)

Pull together your look with a shiny belt buckle, something that is sure to give you that cowboy look in seconds. Whether it’s a striking silver design like this Rectangular Edged Silver Buckle, or a belt with a daintier but just as striking buckle design like the Rhinestone Filigree Belt, a belt buckle lets you personalise your look with something unique to you.

Classic plaid shirts

Whilst a classic graphic tee is just fine, if you’re looking to style a truly Western look, we’d recommend reaching for a plaid shirt. Not only are they super comfortable, but they’re practical and stylish too. For men, we love this Simmental Shirt, and for women we think this Roping Plaid Western Shirt pairs perfectly with a classic boot cut jean. Tuck in your plaid shirt and roll up the sleeves to get that rodeo look spot on.

Western Hat, to top it all off

Top off your look with a cowboy hat, the centrepiece to any Western outfit. Show off your personality with bold patterns and colours, pick a wool style for winter and a straw option in summer, or stick with a classic felt design in traditional black or brown.

If a cowboy hat isn’t your style, you’ll find plenty of trucker hats and baseball caps at an event such as a rodeo, which are equally appropriate for that wranglin' lifestyle. The USA Flag Trucker Cap is one of our favourites, with stylish detailing combined with lightweight, cool, and comfortable technology for everyday wear.

Tassels for the fashion forward

Nothing says “Western” like a tassel or two. Whether you’re going all out with a fringed jacket, or you want to show a little more flair than your basic tee would with a Tassel Top, tassels are a distinctive feature of Western style and so fit perfectly at a rodeo event.

Turquoise Accessories

Accessorise with turquoise – it’s a staple part of rodeo attire as a symbol of Western authenticity as well as holding significance in Native American culture as the ‘stone of life’.

Add some turquoise jewellery to finish off your look, or be bold and step out in a pair of cowboy boots with turquoise detailing – these eye-catching Gillette Western Boots or the Futurity Flash Western Boots work perfectly.
